Why is chalk used in weight lifting

Why chalk is used in weight lifting and why it's useful

Chalk is one of the key accessories which are being prominently used in various sporting events as well as in specific methods of exercises to minimize the slippery affect and to make the grip firm. Therefore, if you want to become a gymnast or a rock climber then you would have to use both your skill and strength for which you should possess solid grip that can be achieved by applying chalk on the palm before the performance. Similarly, if you want to become a weight lifter then you should first understand that your entire lifting process depends on your grip which must be strong. But once you will pick the rhythm then your palms will start perspiring and your grip will reduce. Hence, you would have to use chalk to dry your palms and to regain the same grip.

You must be acquainted with the common use of chalk like the one that is used on blackboard in schools and colleges and in sports like lawn tennis, badminton or in track and field events where powdered chalks are used to make boundary lines. Similarly, there are many more uses of chalk in different fields but when we speak of its use in weight lifting on the modern-day then preferably the chalks made of magnesium carbonate are used.

According to experts, the key advantages of using magnesium carbonate chalks in weight lifting are that they quickly dry the palms and do not create any irritating sensation in spite of its overuse. Even the medical experts recommend magnesium carbonate chalks to the weight lifters but warn them to use it as per instructions of the coach.

In weight lifting like clean and jerk or deadlifts, you would have to first develop your grip. In clean and jerk, in spite of having less weight, you can do heavy lifting for which your grip should be strong. In this form of lifting, first you lift the weight rapidly from floor to rack position that requires rapid movement and strength and then you lift the weight over your head. During the process, a slip in the grip can cause muscle strain or can potentially injure your wrists and to avoid this, you would have to apply adequate powdered chalk on your palm to maintain dryness for longer time. Similarly, in deadlifts and other weight lifting methods, you would have to ensure that your grip may not reduce due to excessive sweats on your palms.

However, there are many weight lifters who do not completely depend on the chalk and use a combination of other accessories along with chalk to have a firm and dry grip during lifting. Similarly, some coaches and gym instructors also advice weight lifters to avoid too much use of chalk. Instead, they encourage weight lifters to use gloves or sometimes wrist or weight lifting straps to maintain the rhythm of lifting in spite of perspiring palms. Some gym owners don't allow usage of chalk to maintain cleanliness and hence they promote other options for better grip.
